Mean Circulation in the Great Lakes

چکیده
In this paper new maps are presented of mean circulation in the Great Lakes, employing long-term current observations from about 100 Great Lakes moorings during the 1960s to 1980s. Knowledge of the mean circulation in the Great Lakes is important for ecological and management issues because it provides an indication of transport pathways of nutrients and contaminants on longer time scales. Based on the availability of data, summer circulation patterns in all of the Great Lakes, winter circulation patterns in all of the Great Lakes except Lake Superior, and annual circulation patterns in Lakes Erie, Michigan, and Ontario were derived. Winter currents are generally stronger than summer currents, and, therefore, annual circulation closely resembles winter circulation. Circulation patterns tend to be cyclonic (counterclockwise) in the larger lakes (Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior) with increased cyclonic circulation in winter. In the smaller lakes (Lake Erie and Lake Ontario), winter circulation is characterized by a two-gyre circulation pattern. Summer circulation in the smaller lakes is different; predominantly cyclonic in Lake Ontario and anticyclonic in Lake Erie. INDEX WORDS: Circulation, Great Lakes.

Section 4 HYDROMETEOROLOGY: CLIMATE AND HYDROLOGY OF THE GREAT LAKES
The climate of the Great Lakes Region is determined by the general westerly atmospheric circulation, the latitude, and the local modifying influence of the lakes. Due to the lake effect, the regional climate alternates between continental and semi-marine. The semi-marine climate is more consistent contiguous to the lakes, but with favorable meterological conditions, it may penetrate deeply inla...
متن کاملA 3D Hydrodynamic Lake Model: Simulation on Great Slave Lake
Large lakes are recognized as an important influence on the circulation of the atmosphere; in return the resulting meteorological forcing also affects the lake thermal structure. This interaction is complex and continues to be a critical issue considering the millions of lakes in Canada, many of which are large, and are unaccounted for in the current climatic models. This paper evaluates the pr...

متن کاملEvaluating diatom succession: some pecularities of the Great Lakes case
Succession of diatom communities in the Laurentian Great Lakes has several unusual aspects related to physical and chemical characteristics peculiar to these large systems and the constraints these conditions impose upon species which inhabit the Great Lakes. In such systems, paleolimnological reconstructions based on strict analogy to succession patterns in smaller lakes may be incomplete and,...
متن کاملPICTURE OF THE MONTH Observation of Coexisting Mesoscale Lake-Effect Vortices over the Western Great Lakes
Mesoscale vortices are one of several types of wintertime lake-effect structures that are observed over the Great Lakes region as cold arctic air is rapidly modified from below by warm lake waters. These vortices are thought to occur less frequently than other lake-effect structures, such as wind-parallel snowbands (e.g., Kristovich 1993), which are responsible for greater than half of the year...
